Two days later, at dawn, all the slaves were lined up with the pigs, the cattle, the goats, and the chickens so that Captain Anthonyâs property could be divided. Frederick, standing next to Perry, silently prayed that heâd be chosen by Lucretia, not by Andrew.
It was almost mid-morning when Lucretia and Andrew finally arrived, and Frederick could see easily that Andrew was drunk again.
The animals were divided first, then herded away into separate pens by men Andrew and Lucretia had chosen to be their overseers. Finally, only the slaves were left. Some of the younger children were crying.
âI wish I could do something to keep them quiet,â Frederick whispered to Perry.
âTheyâll feel the sting of Andrewâs whip if they donât stop,â Perry whispered back.
After fewer than ten of the slaves had been divided into two groups, one for Andrew and one for Lucretia, Andrew whispered something to Lucretia, who nodded, then he returned to the carriage, and the driver headed back down the road for the Great House.
Frederick felt himself starting to relax. Even though it was still possible that heâd be given to Andrew, Andrew wouldnât be around for a while to lash out at anyone.
When Lucretia finally reached Frederick and Perry, she gave them both a big smile.
âI want you both,â Lucretia said. âPerry, youâll stay here with me on the plantation.â
âYes, maâam, Miss Lucretia,â Perry said. He grinned at Frederick, then he took his place with the other slaves Lucretia had chosen.
âFrederick, I have heard very nice things from my husbandâs brother and his wife in Baltimore,â Lucretia said. âIâm sending you back there so you can continue your good work.â
Frederick couldnât believe what he had just heard. âOh, thank you, maâam,â he said. âI wonât do anything to anger you or the Aulds.â
âI shouldnât expect less from you, Frederick,â Lucretia said.
